How to grow vegetables indoors in a practical way

By: ChrisComments: 0

Growing vegetables indoors is fast becoming a trend these days. With people adapting to a more healthy lifestyle, they tend to opt for growing their own produce instead of buying high-priced organic vegetables. There's also an advantage with this method of growing, you'll have more control of the environment and pests are not much of a problem when you grow indoors.

There are, however, several things you need to keep in mind if you want to get the most out of your indoor garden. Here's a practical guide for you to go through this process:

1. First off, you'll need to determine where exactly you're going to place your indoor garden. A good area will be on window sills, patios, and decks. As long as your plants can have 6-8 hours of sun exposure or 8-10 hours of artificial indoor lights for plants and watering it poses no problem, any space will do.

2. You also have to determine what type of vegetables you're going to grow. I strongly suggest that you choose vegetables that can easily thrive in an indoor environment. Examples of these are tomatoes, herbs, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, and broccoli, among others.

3. Next you need to collect the containers you're going to use. There are containers specifically used for this purpose available in the market these days. However, any container will do as long as it has the ideal depth and you can bore holes at the bottom for proper water flow.

4. Prepare the soil. Most plants require humus soil for them to thrive. Additionally, you may also have to add organic fertilizer to give the plants the necessary nutrients for their optimum growth. Remember that nutrient-rich soil would produce a high-quality yield.

5. Then, you can sow the seed at the start of a frost-free season in your area. Most seeds have to be set at about 3-5 times deeper than its maximum width. Once you've observed the seedling showing its first true leaves and roots, you need to thin out the seedlings. Ideally, 1 plant should occupy 1 pot.

6. Remember to water the plants regularly, keeping the sol moist at all times. You can also harden off the plants by taking them outside for a few hours for 1 whole week. Add some fertilizers as well as needed.
